Doge of Venice
The Doge of Venice was the highest authority in the Republic of Venice from 697 CE to 1797 CE.
The Doge was both the head of state and the head of the Venetian oligarchy. The position was elected for life through a complex voting process.
Initially, the Doge held significant power, but over time, the aristocracy imposed limits, and constitutional bodies took over many government functions.
By the 15th century, the Doge had become a prince subject to the law.
The last Doge, Ludovico Manin, was deposed when Napoleon conquered northern Italy in 1797.
